| The
fundraising committee develops ideas and organizes various events
throughout the year to raise funds for the clubs discretionary use.
Sometimes we have a specific cause to which we contribute funds i.e.
polio plus. Other events raise funds that go directly to the clubs
to distribute to local, national or international causes.
Fundraising events most
often include Rotarians, and members of the community and focus on
incorporating family, friends and neighbors wherever
possible.

The Rotary Club of Port Hope was chartered in 1922 and continues to flourish today with its 40 members meeting weekly. Our service club is very proud of its volunteer efforts, which enables us to donate the monies raised to charitable projects. We provide awards for students at ?>Port Hope High School and at St. Mary’s Secondary School. We have provided literacy and character education kits for five elementary schools in the area. One of our recent local projects was the Riverfront Walkway, with the gazebo and benches in Rotary Park, south of the library.
We also give financial support to The Northumberland Women’s Shelter, our local hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Rotary Foundation (which does incredible charitable work for the world) and to the victims of the fire on Walton Street, to name a few.
Each year our club hosts a Rotary Youth Exchange Student who lives with three families in Port Hope while the student attends Port Hope High School. By hosting a student, we can send a local student from Port Hope on this year long cultural exchange which is a tremendous experience that allows the youth of our world to have a deeper cultural understanding and become caring and contributing leaders in our communities.
Internationally, Rotary is involved in a project, started in 1985 to eradicate the poliovirus worldwide. We are very close to achieving this goal. There only a few countries that still have active cases of polio.
Our club has worked with the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise to provide Bio-sand water filters to families in the village of Consuelo in the Dominican Republic. We sent shelter boxes to Haiti, which were the first relief to a people that suffered an unprecedented natural disaster last year.
By supporting our fundraising projects like the ones listed below, you allow our club to continue to fund worthy charitable projects that make our community and our world a better place to live.
Port Hope Fall
Fair
One of the Rotary Club’s traditional fund raising activities occurs at the Port Hope Fall Fair, which takes place in mid September. Here you will find us barbecuing hotdogs, hamburgers, and sausages on a bun and serving these with cold drinks just outside the Town Park Recreation Centre. This is a wonderful family and community fair and an event that we are proud to be involved with for so many years.
| The
